“Dating My Mother,” directed by Mike Roma, examines the personal and difficult relationship of a single mother and her homosexual son as they negotiate the perilous world of online dating. While searching for their own versions of Mr Right, mother and son find that sometimes being apart is necessary in order to develop together.
Dating My Mother isn’t precisely a romantic comedy or a family drama, but it is highly charming, warmly humorous, and has one of the nicest mother/son relationships in recent film history. This film manages to strike genuinely nostalgic as well as incredibly humorous chords while remaining gloriously self-aware, new, true to itself, and charmingly tongue-in-cheek. It’s incredible and wonderful to witness a film that satirizes internet dating via a profoundly real and funny viewpoint.
